Of Flight & Plight
Early November 2022 I spent a few days exploring the forest and canopy of the Eastern Tiers. The area is part of the logging coupe SH045A which continues to be actively logged. The coupe is filled with hollow and flower bearing eucs, habitat necessary for survival of the critically endangered swift parrot.
The extent of the logging has also gone beyond the planned coupe bounds defined by Sustainable Timbers Tasmania and into an informal reserve of parrot habitat. Due to the nature of this hollowed habitat, the majority of timber will be exported as woodchips.
Three arrests have since taken place within that week, with the arresting officer stating "we don't have environmental police".
The decimation of vital habitat continues.
